MARKLEEVILLE / ALPINE COUNTY — October 22, 2026. Drivers planning to travel on State Routes 88 and 89 in Alpine County on Friday, October 23, should be prepared for possible one-way traffic controls at three electrical-work locations. The California Department of Transportation’s October 19 advisory schedules those operations from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the October 19–23 workweek.
For residents, visitors and people crossing the Sierra, the distinction matters: one-way traffic control is not the same as an all-day closure of a highway. Motorists may be asked to stop temporarily while traffic is alternated through a work area. Caltrans cautions that construction schedules are subject to change.
Where the traffic controls are scheduled
- State Route 88, near the California–Nevada boundary: an electrical-work operation is scheduled through Friday, October 23, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- State Route 88 at Schneir Road: one-way traffic control for electrical work is scheduled through Friday, October 23, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
- State Route 89 at the Alpine–El Dorado county line: another one-way traffic control for electrical work is scheduled through Friday, October 23, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
These are three separate locations listed in a single county advisory; they should not be interpreted as a continuous closure along both routes.
How to plan a trip through Alpine County
Caltrans estimated that drivers could experience delays of approximately five to ten minutes around its scheduled work zones. That figure is an agency planning estimate, not a live measurement for a particular driver. Weather, traffic incidents, materials and construction circumstances can alter the plans. Travelers should leave enough time for delays and check an official source before taking a mountain route.
Use Caltrans QuickMap for live roadway conditions or Caltrans Highway Information for reported restrictions. If you encounter flaggers, cones or workers, follow their instructions and do not attempt to overtake traffic queues.
Important: this is not the same advisory as Amador County’s work
State Route 88 runs through multiple counties. Separate controls listed around Jackson and farther west in Amador County are subject to different schedules and project locations. A closure or restriction posted for one county should not be generalized to the entire route. For trips spanning county lines, check each segment before departure.
What the source confirms — and what it does not
The Caltrans District 10 traffic advisory dated October 19, 2026 confirms the scheduled work zones and hours. It does not guarantee that crews are active at every location at every moment on Friday, and it does not establish live delays or closures.
